We were so close. A few inches separated us. His eyes tracked over my face, falling to my mouth, staying, before his hold on me gentled. His hand slid down to my arm and around to my back, urging me even closer. “You don’t pull that out unless I’m unconscious and you’re about to be killed. Okay? If someone has you and I have the shot, I’ll take the shot. I’m good at this shit. I was trained for this before I became a cop. I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

He was trained for this before he became a cop?

What did he mean by that? Trained for what?

New shivers seared me. Fear and arousal.

I eyed him back and finally said, “If you’re not going to fuck me or kiss me, let’s get this over with so you can.”

He gave me a rakish grin before his hand grabbed the back of my neck. He yanked me to him again, his mouth fused with mine. A thrill went through me, sending my pulse speeding. He added pressure, his lips demanding me to open for him, and as I did, lust swept through me. The inferno was switched on once again.

The kiss was over too quickly.

He pulled back, giving me a last heated look before opening his door. “Let’s go.”

Whoa.

Okay.

Let me just steady my knees and then I’ll be ready for a potential shoot-out.

Chapter Thirty

Sawyer

The inside of the pub was busier than it looked from the outside. Long tables lined out from the walls, filled to the brim with people. There were some my age, but the majority were younger, in their twenties. I caught sight of the college shirts on multiple groups and learned that this was a college bar.

This meet was taking place here?

Jake wove through the crowd with an easy deftness. He was right. This sort of stuff was where he excelled. He looked comfortable and at ease, relaxed while my legs were still knocking into each other. The whole comment that he’d been trained for this still nagged at me. I was looking at him with new eyes, looking for that earlier training.

I didn’t like the thought that he’d gone through some type of killer training before he was a cop. When was that? Who trained him?

I kept close to him, reaching out and holding on to the back of his flannel at one point.

The crowd was a lot. The press of people had to be violating eighteen different fire codes.

When he felt my touch, he reached back to my hip and yanked me close to him. I was almost hugging him from behind, but he only transferred my hand from his shirt to the side of his pants, tucking my hand into his jeans.

The backs of my fingers rubbed against his warm skin.

I grinned faintly. That felt nice.

It felt . . . It felt right. Like we should’ve been doing this all our life, and why were we only starting now?

As we kept going, one of his arms returned to the back of my hip, keeping me to him. When he switched directions, he pulled me with him, making it all happen so smoothly.

I had a brief wonder of how he was as a dancer. I bet he was good at it.

More than a few heads turned our way when we first got into the pub. Those eyes were on Jake. I saw the notice in some women’s gazes, more than a few showing blatant interest, but the crush of the people took us away from them. However, as we kept moving through the first section of the building and into a back section, more women caught sight of Jake.

A few blinked widely as we passed in front of them.

A few reached out to touch him, but he paid them no attention.

I snuck a peek from the side. Jake was laser-focused ahead, scanning every face with a professional efficiency that he must’ve perfected as a cop.

Or that training, a small voice whispered in the back of my mind.

That was going to bother me for a while. I wanted to know what all happened to him before he joined the police force.

But that way he was surveying everyone, it was with hawklike precision.

When he caught sight of his target, everything changed. His body tensed. He was locked on. Laser focused.

He moved us to the edge of a group and pulled me in front of him, angling us so my back was to a group behind me. We rested our shoulders against the wall. He was in front of me, his chest to mine. His hand slid up my thigh, around my ass, and he slipped it under my shirt, holding me against him.

That felt nice too.

He dipped his head down to my neck, breathing me in as he was watching behind me.
