Billy angles his body, so he’s in front of me, giving me shelter. “Is there a problem?” His voice drips with condescension.

“You’re not supposed to be back here,” the angrier one says. “I’ll ask you again, what are you doing here?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” Billy drawls. His body is relaxed, while I’m vibrating with nerves. “I finally got this perfect woman to give me the time of day. I wanted to get her alone for some private conversation. But since we’re no longer alone, we’ll go.” He sounds bored and annoyed, as if the execs are trespassing on his turf, instead of the other way around.

“How did you even get in here?”

Billy shrugs with every ounce of his arrogance. “The door was unlocked. If you don’t want people in here, you should make sure it’s secure.” While the exec is sputtering, he puts a hand at my back and guides me away. They call after us, and I flinch, but we’re back in the mix of guests, and they don’t seem to want to follow and make a scene.

We keep a sedate pace, wandering almost aimlessly towards the door.

“Thank you,” I breathe once we step outside.

“Don’t thank me. We’re not out of the woods yet. But once we are,” he fixes me with a narrow-eyed look that makes my stomach swoop again. “You owe me an explanation.”

Billy

I don’t know what’s going on. I just caught Aubrey attempting some sort of corporate espionage.

And I helped her. I don’t know how I got involved in this mess, other than I saw the gala invite on Aubrey’s dresser and couldn’t bear the thought of her going with anyone else but me.

Now I’m on the phone with Sully, getting him to wipe all evidence from the security cameras to make sure neither of us are caught. I can hear his curiosity in his voice, but I don’t bother to explain. I’m not sure I can, even if I made a habit of explaining myself to my packmates.

I hang up with Sully. “It’s done,” I tell her.

She sighs and nods, sinking back in the limo seat. She’s a vision in the silver dress I chose for her. The thought of laying her down and feasting on her pussy right here in the back seat makes my mouth water. But I’m not ready for that distraction yet.

“You’re not off the hook yet. Talk.”

“It’s a long story–”

“I just helped you avoid a few felony charges. I think I’ve earned the right to hear why you were doing something so reckless.”

She blows out a breath, but she must realize I put my neck out for her. I’m not too worried about the consequences, but my wolf is geared up, wanting to protect the little human from any threats. “Sentience is stealing from artists,” she blurts. “A whistleblower has proof that they uploaded artists’ work illegally.”

“It’s an LLM. It was trained on tons of data.”

“It’s still wrong.” She blinks her big brown eyes at me. “This hurts people, Billy. Artists like me.”

“That’s for the law to decide.”

“The law is about a century behind the times. When laws are unjust, it’s our duty to resist.”

“It still was reckless. We could’ve been caught.” I’ll never forget the way my heart lurched at the sight of her in the server room. She’s lucky I scented the security guard and got us out of the server room in time.

“But we weren’t.” Aubrey smirks. “And now Jamie–the whistleblower–will be able to get the incriminating evidence we need.”

I run a hand down my face. While I admire Aubrey’s loyalty and commitment to justice, I wish she had a little more self preservation. This little human will be the death of me.

“Relax, Suit, it worked. And you were brilliant. The way you told off those Sentience guys. How did you know they were coming?”

“Heard them,” I lie. I caught their scents.

“I wouldn’t have thought to cover our tracks with a make out session.”

“Maybe I just wanted to kiss you.”

Light glints off her silver nose ring with the movement of her smile. “How did you follow me?”

I followed her scent trail, but I can’t tell her that. “Saw you sneak into the stairwell. So I stole a keycard and followed.” The last part is true.

“Huh, I thought I was stealthy enough.”

“You were good, Silver. But I’m better.”

She snorts at my bravado, as I knew she would. “So suave. You know, I thought you looked like James Bond when I first saw you tonight.”

I curl my lip. “Ugh.”

“What? I thought you’d take that as a compliment.”

“I don’t drink weak-ass martinis. Shaken, not stirred,” I mock. “Please.”

“Whatever. We make a good team.”

“Yeah, Silver, we do.” We share a grin, and it does something peculiar to my chest. “But now you owe me.”

“Excuse me? You’re the one who decided you were going to tag along as my date.”
