“You can’t talk to me like that.” She raises her chin stubbornly, but I don’t miss the way her hands go to the hem of her dress like she’s thinking about pulling it up.

“I’ll make you a bet, Scout.” If there’s one thing I know for sure, it’s that she’s not going to back down from a challenge. “Take off your panties and show them to me. If they’re dry, I’ll get up from this table and let you have a nice dinner by yourself.” She swallows hard as I lean closer. “But if you’ve soaked through them, like I suspect you have, then you’re mine tonight.”

“This isn’t…” She looks around and lowers her voice. “I can’t exactly do it here with people around us.”

There’s a flash in her eyes like she’s won, but she should know me better than that. “I’d love nothing more than for you to let me check myself, but the ladies’ room is right there.” I nod to the door nearby, and her shoulders sag. “Unless you’re afraid of what your panties will tell me.”

Her spine straightens as she turns back to me, a defiant gleam in them. “I’m not afraid of anything.”

“Except giving me a shot.” I raise an eyebrow at her, and there’s something in the way she’s looking at me that softens.

“Taylor,” she says softly.

“What? You’re too busy filling up your dance card with chumps like Frankie Witt to let me take you out.”

Now the spark is back in her eyes. “You know what, I’m going to give you my panties so you can shove them in your mouth and stop talking.”

“Are you trying to turn me on?” I grin at her as she tosses her napkin on the table.

“You’re a pig.”

“Only because getting you mad turns you on.”

“Does not.” Her cheeks are flushed, and she’s breathing heavily, but she’s looking at my mouth like she wants to kiss me. “I’m going to the bathroom.”

She stands from her chair, but I take her hand before she can walk away. “You can put your panties under the hand drier in the bathroom, but I’ll still know that pretty pussy of yours soaked them plenty, just for me.”

She jerks out of my hold and goes straight to the bathroom while I sit at the table and hate myself. Why do I let her push me to the edge? Why can’t I control myself when I’m around her? It’s like I’m so fucking turned on all the blood in my brain goes to my dick.

Ever since the moment I first saw her, I wanted her. Of course she’s a fucking knockout and every man’s fantasy come to life. But it’s the way she’s soft when she thinks no one is watching. The way she’s fiercely protective of her friends and cousin Spencer. It’s how she laughs with her whole heart but is strong when she needs to be. She’s everything I’ve ever wanted, and she can’t stand the sight of me.

Fuck, what have I done?

I drain the glass of wine in front of me before pouring another. I have no idea if she’s coming out of that bathroom anytime soon, but she left her purse at the table. Eventually she has to come back to me, and maybe this time I won’t fuck it up.

Probably not, but a guy can dream.

Chapter Three

SCOUT

This is a hundred percent why I can't be around Taylor. I make the stupidest choices because my brain can’t function properly. It’s how I ended up on that shitty date, and yes, I’m blaming him for it. Better him than me.

Now I’m standing outside my apartment waiting for Spencer and Abbie to come down and unlock it for me. Of course I snuck out of the restaurant without my purse. The man makes me irrational.

"Did you leave your keys at the office?" Spencer asks after unlocking my door.

"I don't want to talk about it,” I huff as I hurry in to turn the alarm off.

"Does this have to do with Taylor?"

"Abbie!" I whip around and glare at her.

"Shit, sorry." Abbie's eyes widen as she panics. "I meant Taylor Swift. Not any other Taylor. She dropped a new album, so I was confused."

"I'm not stupid," Spencer chuckles. "Chill, Scout. I saw you hiding under your desk."

"I dropped my pen." I might have dropped it on purpose, but I was down there getting it. I just also happened to take my time.

"Whatever." He shakes his head, not buying what I'm selling. "Then there’s the way he stares at you."

"He stares?" I ask, making Abbie giggle. Damn it.

"He's a good guy, Scout. You should give him a chance."

"He does illegal things." I raise an eyebrow in challenge at my cousin. He should be fully aware of what Taylor is capable of.

"I have no clue what you're talking about," Spencer says with a completely straight face. He's full of shit, but I'm sure the law firm will protect Taylor at all costs.
