I’d not known there was a ticket out of this.
“I’ll find something we can use. Come hell or high water.”
Four
Montana
This wasn’t so bad. It was actually cozy. I had everything I needed. I was alone.
“As usual, Momma, you were right,” I said softly.
The only downfall was the guy I had to rely on for transportation. Than hated me. I’d done nothing to him. It was a first-sight situation. While I’d dealt with how attractive he was, he’d glowered at me like I was shit on the bottom of his boot.
Whatever. I didn’t care. He was a temporary thing I could get through.
Besides, this setup was better than I’d imagined. I wasn’t even going to have to see Jericho, and I had a cute little cabin to live in. I wished I knew how to light a fire because the fireplace was something we’d never had. The idea of sitting in front of one on the sofa—which, other than a coffee table and side table, was the only furniture in the living area—sounded magical. And right now, I could use a little magic.
The kitchen and living area were one open room with the living area being to the right when you walked in the door and the kitchen to your left. The kitchen wasn’t big enough for a table, but had two stools on this side of the counter. Then you walked through a single doorway into the bedroom. A double bed with a plush white quilt and several fluffy pillows, a nightstand, a narrow dresser, and a wooden clothing rack filled the limited space. The floor was hardwood, but there was a round rug with dainty little blue flowers on it that matched the blue of the lamp on the nightstand.
The bathroom was to the right and had no door, but a curtain that hung from the ceiling to the floor in the same blue as the flowers and lamp. Behind it was a claw-foot tub, a sink, and a toilet.
And that was all of it. The entire cabin. Big enough for one.
Smiling at the thought, I walked over to the fridge and opened it to see if there was anything in there. I was parched. The thought of asking Than to take me to buy a few things at the grocery store sounded less than appealing.
The sight inside was not expected. There was milk, orange juice, sodas, and bottles of water. Also what looked like a pitcher of lemonade. That wasn’t all though. Berries in bowls, a dozen eggs, meats and cheeses for sandwiches, a tray of fresh, chopped veggies with hummus and ranch dip. I leaned down to peek at the bottom shelf to see what appeared to be prepared meals with heating instructions handwritten on sticky notes that sat on top.
The door to the cabin opened behind me, and I straightened, spinning around to see who had walked inside. Than’s annoyed gaze went from me to the fridge.
“Thank fuck Jayda stocked the place. I’m starving.”
Who was Jayda, and why was he talking like he was about to eat here? He’d walked off with Linc. Why was he back?
“Uh, what are you doing?” I asked hesitantly.
I wasn’t sure I wanted the answer. I could feel it in my gut that I wasn’t going to like it.
“I’m sure as hell not sitting outside,” he replied as he strolled over and looked around me into the fridge. “You gonna get something out or move?”
Stunned, I stepped out of the way.
His surprised look when I did as he’d asked reminded me that I wasn’t going to let him or any of them boss me around. I was just trying to figure out why he was in here. I knew he was going to take me places, but he wasn’t staying here…right? Because that was not okay.
“I’m still confused,” I told him. “Why are you here?”
He reached in and grabbed a handful of berries. “I answered that question. I knew you were slow, but I didn’t realize it was that bad.”
Slow? What did he mean by, I was slow?
I shook my head. Stay on topic.
“No. You said you weren’t going to sit outside. I am asking why you are in the vicinity. In here or out there.”
He’d called me slow. That was sinking in as my body stiffened and my eyes narrowed. What the actual hell?
He straightened and popped some berries into his mouth, then glanced over his shoulder at me. “You thought Linc was just gonna leave you back here? Alone? Someone who blackmails her own father?”
I did not care how hot this guy was. I couldn’t think of anyone I hated more than him at this moment other than Jericho. How dare he? He knew nothing about me, and he was calling me slow and acting like I was a terrible person because I was blackmailing a man who never paid child support and acted like I didn’t exist. Rage rolled through me, and I couldn’t form words. I wanted to scream and pound my fists into his chest, but I doubted that would hurt him. It would likely feel like I was hitting a wall. Stupid bastard.
