Yes.

There was a lot we could do with a playroom.

Ashton’s snickers brought me back to the moment, though. “Sorry. I got lost in plans.”

And that got more giggles, making it clear that hadn’t been a surprise. “Are you laughing at me?”

Yes.

He didn’t bother to hide it, nodding and making happy sounds as he snuggled into me. “I think I’m offended.”

That didn’t seem to be believable at all, but it did get me a hug and he ran his hand over my head. “Petting Daddy to make him feel better?”

Ashton didn’t react to the Daddy label, but his head bobbed again and he patted my cheeks. “I feel much better. Thank you.”

His beaming smile and the happy dance wiggle said he was very proud of himself for fixing his dramatic Daddy, and with that done, he rolled off my lap and went back to his toys. A little’s work was never done so he couldn’t stop for cuddles yet. He had toys to sort and a zoo to set up.

Chapter 19

Ashton

“What did you write down on your application, Ashton?” Micha’s words came out in a quiet, rough whisper. He was trying to be discreet but it was obvious he was reaching his limit.

Nonsense.

I’d written nonsense.

It was his fault, though.

He’d been the one to say I couldn’t have my quiet toy or play with my fucking zoo until I’d answered the online questions from the club. So I’d answered the questions. He’d never said anything about doing a good job at it, just that I’d needed to be honest.

So I’d written honest nonsense.

“I was honest and I wrote complete sentences.” So technically I’d done what he’d asked. “If they had a problem with my form, I’m sure they’d have responded back to clarify things. This is probably routine.”

Hopefully making us wait to talk to one of the owners was routine.

I’d told myself someone would email me with a what the fuck kind of response if they’d been confused, but maybe not? They had to get forms filled out by slightly frustrated pain-in-the-ass subs on a regular basis, right?

Crossing my toes that I hadn’t fucked things up beyond all repair, I did my best to look innocent and bored, but judging by the way the guy at the front desk was trying not to smile, I needed to work on it. “I’m sure it’s nothing.”

Toes and everything else crossed too.

Well, besides my fingers…if I did that Micha would know I’d done something.

That was a mistake I would only make once.

“That’s not believable at all.” Sighing, Micha got his scheming face on. “If you explain the problem to me before someone comes to scream at us, I might be able to get ahead of the issue.”

“This isn’t the furniture store. I’m sure they’ll be nice.” Some people were just dramatic as fuck. “I think next time it might be a good idea for you to sit down with me or not withhold things to get what you want.”

The front desk guy was going to pop something if he kept his giggles in much longer.

Micha groaned. “For fuck’s sake, Ashton, I made you wait five minutes for the fucking…things.”

I admired his restraint for not saying the actual stuff, but it was just making our audience more curious and more delighted.

“Not my fault. It was your bad decision that got us to this point.” Whatever it was going to look like. “Stop looking guilty. At least aim to look bored. You’re the one who’s going to get us in trouble.”

“I’m looking guilty because I accidentally unleashed you on an unsuspecting victim.” Micha sounded so frustrated about that I thought he might’ve had a point.

Well, I thought about it for five seconds before a side door popped open and the front desk guy popped and started laughing.

Oops.

The slender-built guy who was dressed in a tux ignored the giggly front desk guy and gave Micha and me firm glares. “I have questions.”

Was he supposed to be James Bond?

Micha squeezed my hand in a clear behave or else kind of gesture, so I kept my mouth closed and let him do the talking. “I’m sure we’ll have answers, but I have to admit, I don’t know what he did.”

Me and tux guy rolled our eyes.

“Throw me under the bus why don’t you.” Micha wasn’t impressed by my response, but tux guy almost smiled.

“The instructions said for us to answer the questions independently.” Micha’s blood pressure was starting to go up because the one vein in his neck that was his telltale response started to throb.

Not good.

“I’m sorry.” Now I was, at least. “Don’t get mad. If they’d been pissed at me, we wouldn’t have gotten this far. There’s a reason I need supervision.”

Lots of supervision.

Now tux guy was snickering too.

Hoping that meant he wasn’t as frustrated as Micha was worried he’d be, I aimed an innocent look at tux guy that was more believable than the first. “I’m sorry. I should’ve answered the questions in a more…”
