Heat rushes to my face as I open my eyes to stare up at him. All that planning and I embarrass myself the second he gets home.

"Careful, baby girl." Landon smiles down at me, tugging me closer.

“Sorry.” My fingers are digging into the front of his crisp white button-up shirt. “I guess I got excited.”

“Don’t ever be sorry for throwing yourself into my arms,” he says, and I let out a small, awkward laugh.

“I’m sure that happens to you a lot.” I try to make a joke out of it, but my own joke lands wrong even to me. There’s a queasy feeling in my stomach, and I wish I could redo all of this and make it perfect.

“Want me to be honest?” He lifts his brows, and I know I shouldn’t say yes, but it’s like I have to know the answer. As much as this might sting, I nod. “If it was anyone but you, I likely would have stepped aside.”

“Really?” Another laugh leaves me, and this time it’s genuine. Only Landon doesn’t join in as his face remains neutral. “No way. You’re too nice to do that.”

“I’m not nice,” he says, leaning closer. “But you’re different from everyone else.”

“Oh yeah?” I flutter my eyelashes playfully. “Is it because I’m special?”

“You’re more than special, Piper.”

The way he’s looking at me is so intense all my playfulness falls away, and I bite my bottom lip. I really, really want that to be true.

"You're special to me too," I admit.

"Is that so?" A sexy smile pulls at the edge of his mouth.

"My own knight in shining armor."

Landon barks a laugh. "Now that's the first time anyone has called me that."

"Garfield said it earlier. Too bad you missed it."

"I knew I shouldn't have gone to work today." His eyes drop to my mouth, and my heart gives a small flutter.

He's going to kiss me! I let my eyes fall closed, but they pop right back open when a loud alarm starts to go off.

"Shit." Landon straightens and makes sure I stay on my feet.

"Oh no! Our dinner!" I shout as Landon rushes toward the kitchen. I follow after him, and when he grabs the baking sheet out of the oven, my heart sinks. The whole top of the crust is burnt. “Crap, I’m so sorry. I guess I got distracted.” I huff. "It wasn't anything fancy. Just my gram's biscuit pot pie."

It's been a long time since I made it, but I wasn’t exactly paying attention while Landon was holding on to me.

“I’m flattered.”

“What?” I ask, confused and disappointed in myself.

“That I’m distracting enough to make you burn dinner.”

I shake my head at him. “This is my job, and I’m sucking at it.”

“You’re not sucking at it. That oven is always overcooking things. I should see about replacing it.”

“Are you saying that to make me feel better?”

“I’ll say anything to take that sad expression off your face.”

“Oh, well, in that case.”

“You have something in mind?” he asks as I move closer.

“I think a kiss would actually make me feel better.”

The words no sooner leave my lips than Landon presses his to mine.

Dinner might have been a success after all.

Chapter Fourteen

LANDON

“Piper,” I moan as one hand goes to her hair and the other goes to her ass. “You have to tell me to stop.”

Her lips are soft and wet as she opens for me and lets me taste her. My body is shaking with need, and I don’t think I can control myself much longer.

“Why would I ever want you to do that?” Her voice is breathy like she can’t get enough air between kisses. That makes two of us.

“Because if you don’t, I’m going to carry you to my bed and worship every inch of your body.”

“Is that a threat?” Her arms go around my neck, and she pulls me closer. “Because it sounds like a dream come true.”

I hesitate, looking her in her eyes. “Just know that once I get a taste, I won’t be able to stop. Ever.” I rub my thumb over her bottom lip, desperate to sink my teeth into it. “I’ve been waiting for you to catch up to what I feel, but if I get you in my bed, you’re not leaving it.”

“I know you think this is supposed to scare me, but all I’m hearing is that you want me for more than just a night. More than for the time being.”

My fingers grip her harder, and my hold is completely possessive. “The time being?” I shake my head. “I don’t know what else I can do to make you see it, but you’re my forever, baby girl.” I bend down, kissing her lips again before lifting her off the ground. “And I’m going to spend the rest of my life convincing you that I’m yours.”
