I shifted closer, needing more, and was almost in his lap when someone loudly commented, “They’re up there canoodling when they had the gall to judge us for wanting a little roll in the hay.”

Jonathan and I broke apart, and he pressed his forehead to mine as I fought against laughter. Shifting back, I stretched up to peer over the bus seats where Philomena and Archie sat about eight rows behind us.

“Nobody was judging you. We were simply concerned for your whereabouts,” I responded. “Now, eat your lunch, and never mind what we’re doing.”

“Just pointing out the hypocrisy,” she shot back.

I turned back to Jonathan, and as soon as our eyes met, we burst into silent laughter. I buried my face in his shoulder until my giggles subsided then chanced a peek at him. Jonathan stared at me hungrily, his amusement faded as his hand found mine, interlocking our fingers. “You know,” he whispered, his warm breath at my ear setting my skin alight with goosebumps. “Renting out a room for an hour doesn’t sound too bad right now.”

I grinned and gently slapped his chest. “You’re a fiend.”

He leaned closer, tugging my earlobe between his teeth and sending a flurry of tingles down my spine. “Only for you.” He paused then glanced around and continued, “Perhaps we could get away with a quickie in here. The windows are slightly tinted.”

I feigned indignance. “I have no intention of committing an act of public indecency while at work. I could lose my job.”

“Ah, but I’ve heard your new employer is rather lenient in that regard.”

Chuckling, I picked up the sandwich I’d all but forgotten about. I knew I should eat, but my stomach was doing somersaults that blocked my appetite thanks to Jonathan’s effect on me. “Ah, yes, he has a bit of a soft spot for me, I’ve been told. Still, I’m not one for an audience. It’ll have to wait until we get home.”

He smirked and began unwrapping his own sandwich. “Too bad. I could’ve rocked your world.” He lifted the sandwich to his mouth for a bite. “Ah, pickle and cheese. Donny will be thrilled.”

I arched an eyebrow. “Donny?”

Jonathan motioned to the sandwich. “I was talking with a few of the men. These are Donny’s favourite, though Ted prefers egg salad, so he’ll be disappointed. Although Paddy will be pleased since he feels nauseous at the smell of egg.”

Amused warmth filled my chest just picturing Jonathan casually chatting with Donny, Paddy and Ted. I couldn’t love him more if I tried. “Well, I’m glad to hear you’ve been kept abreast of everyone’s sandwich preferences,” I said with a laugh, and then we ate in quiet, finishing off our lunches before we had to return and assist Hannah and Magdalena with distributing the lunches to the rest of the residents.

On the journey home, about two-thirds of them were napping, and I sat next to Jonathan, resting my head on his shoulder while the sounds of two dozen OAPs’ snores surrounded us.

“Thank you for today. I know you must’ve had to put work off to come, and I really appreciate it,” I said to him once we’d returned to Pinebrook and everyone was safely off the bus and back inside the building.

“I was happy to,” Jonathan murmured, his eyes soft as he surveyed me.

“I just have to grab a few things from my office. Should I meet you back at your mam’s house or—?”

“I’ll come with you,” he said, his hand settling on my lower back with purpose as we walked through the corridor. I wasn’t entirely sure why he’d insisted on joining me until he was deftly kicking my office door shut behind him before turning the lock then backing me up into the wall. Milliseconds later, his mouth was at my neck, licking and gently biting.

“Jonathan. What are you …” My words trailed off when his hand slid between my thighs, cupping my sex while his tongue mapped a path along my neck then down towards my breasts, where his other hand began unbuttoning my blouse.

“I can’t wait until we get home,” he almost growled. “I need you now.”

“Wait—”

“Ada.”

“But the … the window …”

At this, Jonathan finally paused his onslaught to glance to his right and see that the blinds were wide open. With impressive speed, he left my side and pulled shut the venetians. Then he was back, capturing my lips with a singular ferocity. I moaned into the kiss, my hands wandering down his back before squeezing his bottom. “I don’t blame Bernie for wanting to take a little pinch,” I joked when I came up for air, and then suddenly, he flipped me so my chest met the wall. It was his turn to squeeze my backside now, his large hands cupping me. “It has nothing on yours. I fucking love your arse,” he rumbled then lifted a hand to push my hair over one shoulder, baring my neck. He pressed his mouth to my nape, his erection thick and heavy against my lower back. One hand still stroking my hair, he twisted it into a rope then tugged my head to the side, exposing my neck. His mouth met my skin once more as he growled against my overheated pores, “Hmm, how shall we do this?”
