“Domhn and Anna have fresh pajamas for whenever guests visit. I figured you wouldn’t say no to silk.”
I laugh. “So you put me in these?”
He smiles. “You sorta helped. You were barely conscious by the time we got here.”
Yeah, that fits my hazy memories. And god, I’m not sure I made it to the bathroom before I climbed in bed because I really gotta pee. I scurry to the ensuite bathroom, marveling at all the gorgeous marble.
Like, yeah, my parents are rich, but this place takes luxury to an entirely different level.
I yelp a little when a warm jet of water shoots up from the toilet to wash me after I finish. I’ve used bidets before but never an automatic one. Well hello, that’ll wake a girl up in the morning.
After I brush my teeth with the unopened toothbrush on the counter, I head back out.
Isaak’s there grinning. “That shitter scare the fuck outta you, too?”
I throw a pillow at his head, which he naturally catches, the coordinated bastard.
I open my suitcase and pull out some clothes to change into. After that, we head down a long, long hallway until we hit more of an open area. I hear voices as I follow Isaak through the chicly decorated mansion and into a gigantic kitchen.
“Good morning,” Anna calls out cheerily from where she’s sitting on the counter of the big white granite island in the center of the room.
Domhnall’s at the stove, and he turns to wave at us as we walk in. “We were just going to come knock on your door. Brunch is almost ready.”
He turns back to the stove to flip another pancake onto a large, growing stack beside the stove.
A plate of perfectly crisped bacon is already set out beside it, right by another plate of fluffy scrambled eggs.
“Well, hell yeah,” Isaak says. “We woulda come here sooner if I’da known I’d get homecooked breakfasts like this.”
“Don’t get excited, big boy.” Domhnall rolls his eyes. “This is a one-day special, for the lady.” He gives me a little bow and wink.
Anna hops off the island wearing soft-looking heather-gray sweats and goes to wrap an arm around Domhn’s stomach. “Oh, don’t try to kid them. We all know you’re really just a big softie.” She gives him a squeeze.
“No one in the world would describe Domhnall Callaghan that way, ’cept you, Miss Anna,” Isaak says with a low laugh as he pulls open the fridge. “Trust me.”
Anna just grins up at Domhn. “That’s because I’ve got him wrapped around my little finger.”
He leans down and drops a kiss on her lips. “Yes, you do.”
Isaak pulls out orange juice, milk, and grapefruit juice, setting them all on the island. “Anyone want anything else? Y’all got the whole grocery store in here.”
“I’ll take some juice,” I say. “Where are the glasses?”
Domhn and Anna are still busy making out, but Domhn gestures vaguely to a cabinet near the fridge, so I start opening cabinets. On my second try, I find the glasses and pull four down.
Anna finally manages to pull away from Domhn. “There’s coffee, too.” She doesn’t get very far. After Domhn switches off the stovetop, he wraps his arms around her waist, trapping her back to his chest and snuggling her there.
The two of them are so sweet, it makes my heart squeeze so hard for a moment I can barely breathe. She’s got a big diamond engagement ring on her finger, and I wonder if they’ve set a date for the wedding yet.
It doesn’t seem right that I should be getting married before these two do. Especially when…
All the sudden I feel like bawling.
I grab my glass and the orange juice, then face away from the other three to pour it.
God, it’s just the leftover emotions from last night still getting to me. That’s all. Because what, I don’t cry for five years, and then suddenly I’m a non-stop faucet? I suck in a big breath and try to swallow back my tears.
So what if my marriage isn’t going to look anything like Anna and Domhn’s? Not everybody gets the fairytale. God knows they fought through hell to get here. They deserve their happy ending.
And I deserve…
… Drew?
All in a whoosh, Isaak’s words from last night after our scene come back to me. It’s time you started getting all the big, beautiful things you deserve, babe.
Suddenly thinking of myself standing there in a beautiful white wedding dress at the front of the gigantic First Baptist Dallas church, across from Drew, feels…
I frown, a shiver going down my spine.
“Kira?” Anna calls from behind me. “You want pancakes?
I swallow.
Poker face time.
I paste a smile on my face, then turn around. “Triple stack, please.”
THIRTY-FIVE
ISAAK
We’re all sitting around a table outside beside Domhn’s pool and manicured back lawn after brunch. It’s almost November, but a late heat wave’s hit, so the girls are sunning themselves by the pool.
